allison, you've written this book about michelle obama, what would michelle do. last night she the did perhaps what many expected but took it to a whole other level. >> what would michelle do? she would look fabulous doing whatever she does. that's what she did in her speech. she reminded people who her husband really is and that he hadn't changed from that community activist that started in chicago who has a genuine concern for people's well-being. what she showed is she still had the confidence in him to make sure the country gets where he needs to go. he needs four more years. she reminded the country that's what the country needs to give him. >> many people said the first lady was referring to governor romney. let me play it. >> he's the same man hop started his career by turning down high-paying jobs and instead working in struggling neighborhoods where a see plant had shut down, fighting to rebuild those communities and get folks back to work. because for bra rack, success isn't about how much money you make. it's about the difference you make in people's l

we were talking about michelle obama. is she a natural? is she just so comfortable now on the stage that she could handle that kind of moment? >> i think she is exactly who she is, that what you saw was completely genuine. the first lady has always been like that. she and the president both have this really long history of community organizing, working with families, church groups, people of faith, students, and that's exactly what you saw last night was the first lady really speaking from the heart, talking about her husband, talking about the incredible people she's met along the way, the work that she and dr. biden have done with the troops. it got me teary-eyed. i think the first lady got inspired because of the stories she was relating. >> the stakes for bill clinton coming out tonight, you went through the campaign, you know just how bitter it was against the clintons. this is a coming together where bill clinton is really going to be validating barack obama on welfare reform and some of the other issues. >> absolutely. and we are so

while republicans dragged a chair onstage to conjure up an invisible president obama, michelle obama critiqued governor romney without mentioning his name, drawing sharp contrasts with her husband and creating a profile in negatives. >> barack's success isn't about how much money you make. it's about the difference you make in people's lives. we learned about honesty and integrity, that the truth matters, that you don't take shortcuts or play by your own set of rules. he's the same man who started his career by turning down high-paying jobs. the issues that come across a president's desk are always the hard ones. the problems where no amount of data or numbers will get you to the right answer. i have seen first-hand that being president doesn't change who you are. no, it reveals who you are. >> joining us now from charlotte, north carolina, is margaret carlson of bloomberg news. margaret, great to see you. before i get to you, i want to send a question over to our folks on set. senator bradley, someone who has in fact run for president, i want to ask you the question of michelle obam

this is where i was when michelle obama and mayor castro spoke last night. it's a very good sight lines to the podium right there over my shoulder in that direction. there are people down there doing walkthroughs for the events of the day. it's an intimate arena and very vertical. most of the seats are somewhat close to the stage. they are great acoustics in here, that speech last night, both of them had a lot of power and a lot of electricity. the room was really alive when this happens. as you look down on pt floor, you'll see it's a relatively small floor. in fact, there are only seven statement delegations on floor of the convention, illinois and delaware and north carolina, the host state, of course, and key swing state, the other states on the floor with the beth seats are virginia, colorado, nevada, iowa, key important battleground states, states like new york very blue are way up in the rafters where you can't even see. they have a great view anyway every manner of jumbotron and video screen here. while the campaign is trying to downplay the signific

and i thought michelle obama's speech was terrific last night. and i was not a huge fan of most of ann romney's speech because i thought they both had the same fundamental goal which is to really speak to the women of america. you saw it in the most recent poll, there's a narrowing of the gap the gender gap between barack obama and mitt romney. and i thought ann romney did it in very heavy handed way, women i love you. i thought michelle obama's approach was more subtle and effective. >> let me play another clip from last night's speech. >> and he believes that when you've worked hard and done well, and walk through that doorway of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you. no, you reach back and you give other folks the same chances that help you succeed. >> the way it was described, both a political and politically masterful. you were there. depending on your point of view, i suppose, it could be considered a -- not so thinly veiled shot at mitt romney or at least a comparison. give me your headline out of my shell obama's speech. >> in s

we bumped in with michele obama, a portion of michele obama's speech, what did you think of it? >> it was a great speech, it really was. so many personal anecdotes you could visualize. we were talking last week about how ann romney said a lot of great things about mitt romney but never gave you the visuals. john said it best. who in america are in that convention hall -- or in that convention hall watching the speech didn't get the image of a loving father struck with ms, seeing his two children sat the top of the stairs and fighting and struggling to get up those stairs to hug his children at the end of the day or fighting and struggling to get out of bad to go to work to give them a slice of the american dream. it was an absolutely fantastic speech. and the great line, absolutely loved the line, that being president doesn't change who you are, it reveals who you are. >> very personal, very revealing but it also might have accomplished something in terms of touching on some key areas that might have needed some work, not that the president, you would think, had a problem with t
